“Trendy is the last stage before tacky.” -Karl Lagerfeld. Speaking of trends, you are about to see bomber jackets all over the place. Whether on the runway, in the magazines or on the streets bombers are about to be one this seasons biggest craze. Every betch and her friends are about to take on the bomber trend. This season you will be obsessed but by the time next year rolls around you won’t even look twice at the jacket “you neeeeeeeeeded to have.” With that being said to avoid looking like a walking “try-hard” mix your super trendy piece with a tried and true classic such as an LBD.
A little black dress is honestly the epitome of chic. Urban Dictionary defines the LBD as follows: “Most women have one in the recesses of their closet. This is the dress that is just a little too short. Just a little too tight. One that hugs curves you never knew you had. One that looks as if it was made for your body and your body only. One that makes you feel sexy the second you put it on. It has to be simple. All black, no buttons or ornamentation. The exhibition of the LBD should only be used in emergencies because once revealed, it would never again have its full potency. The philosophy of the LBD is a writ in the canon of the Sisterhood. “ Obviously there is a reason that year in and year out fashion editors proclaim the power of the little black dress. I do however disagree with the theory that “once revealed, it would never again have its full potency” because in my opinion a LBD is something you can wear a million different times in a million different ways (read my previous posts on versatility if you need a refresher)
Another quote from my boy Karl (for those who don’t know Karl Lagerfeld is the head designer and creative director of Chanel AND Fendi AND he has his own line as well…we should listen to what this guy has to say because he’s clearly got it figured out) “One is never over-dressed or underdressed with a Little Black Dress.” There never was a truer statement (remember it was Karl who said it we should expect nothing less) because when I see a woman wearing an LBD I’m like “good for her like she looks fab”. I know that while Karl and I share very similar views most people are looking at me wanting to scream the words scrawled across the back of my too trendy bomber “Give me a break.” “Right like come on Shelby give us a freaking break a black cocktail dress isn’t an everyday go-to look for everyone, and we dont give a shit what Karl Lagerfeld has to say because you look overdressed.” While that is fair (you already know that I wear faux fur to my folklore lecture), I promise you it is super easy to dress down an LBD. Which is where the trends come in.
Throw a bomber jacket over the LBD to make it more casual. Try wearing sneakers with your LBD like I do. It immediately tones down the dressy factor (it also beats wearing 3 inch heels when my boss sends me all over the city on a 95 degree day). There are so many other options of dressing down the LBD such as a colorful belt, tons of beaded necklaces (a favorite of my moms), or the old faithful denim jacket.
Trends are important to giving new life to your wardrobe but wear them one at a time girl.
